Clos Lapeyre
Jean-Bernard Larrieu
COUNTRY: France
REGION: Southwest France
APPELLATION: AOC Jurancon Sec
Clos Lapeyre was a traditional family farm, that produced livestock, small fruits, and grapes which were taken to the local cooperative. In 1985, Jean-Bernard Larrieu decided to focus solely on viticulture and began cultivating his vines, fermenting his grapes, aging his wines, bottling, and then selling them. The vineyards spread over 10 hectares in 2000, and an extra seven hectares were acquired when the magnificent, old vineyards of Domaine de Nays-Labassère in the heart of Chapelle-de-Rousse in 2004 became part of the estate.
Certified organic viticulture licensed by Qualité France, the soils are plowed in the spring between the rows and the vines to aerate the soils and promote deep rooting. It is believed that the wine is made in the vineyard and therefore minimal intervention is used in the traditional cellar where the wines are matured using either stainless steel tanks for the fruit-driven range of wines oak barrels and with foudres for the other cuvées.

The Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean give the area a mostly maritime climate, although the inlands are more continental – therefore hotter and drier. The rivers Tarn, Lot, Garonne, and Dordogne variety to the soil types of the region, as do vineyards such as Bearn that lie on the slopes of the Pyrénées (with its different altitudes, aspects, and soil stone types.
